Children's kidney Mag-3

This test looks at the excretion of waste products through the kidneys. It is used where there have been recurrent urine infections or abdominal pain. It may also be carried out on very young babies where a problem has been identified on a pre-natal ultrasound scan.

A small amount of a radioactive tracer is injected (this is like a blood test) and then pictures are taken over the following hour with a gamma camera. Your child will be assessed before the test to make sure the injection and the imaging are carried out in a way that is most comfortable and least stressful to your child.

We will not sedate your child as this requires an admission onto a ward, which in itself is a stressful event. However we have an experienced team of nurses and imaging technicians who are skilled in putting children at ease.
