Children's thyroid image

This test examines the function of the thyroid gland and looks at its position in your child's neck. It may be carried out on young babies when an initial blood test has shown low levels of thyroid hormones.

A small amount of a radioactive tracer is injected (this is like a blood test) and then pictures are taken with a gamma camera. Your child will be assessed before the test to make sure the injection and the imaging are carried out in a way that is most comfortable and least stressful to your child.

We will not sedate your child as this requires an admission onto a ward, which in itself is a stressful event. However we have an experienced team of nurses and imaging technicians who are skilled in putting children at ease.
