Cystic fibrosis ward
Adult patients with CF who require inpatient care are almost always all cared for on our 11-bedded C5 isolation ward.
C5 isolation ward is on level C, west wing of Southampton General Hospital (the same level as main entrance). The adult CF team and the dedicated adult CF outpatient clinic rooms are close by.
Every patient is in a single room with en-suite facilities.
Some patients may be cared for on other wards, in single rooms, under particular circumstances, but these are unusual. Examples of this would be day admission for an intravenous infusion or a minor procedure. No matter where you receive care in hospital, the adult CF team will continue to be closely involved in your day to day care.
The sister in charge of the C5 isolation ward is Annette Mason.
We aim to make your stay as tolerable as possible. Facilities include
- Laptop computer/TV
- Free WiFi internet access
- Wii Fit
- Playstation 3
- DVD collection
- Exercise bike
- Bedside telephone
We are very grateful to all those who have raised money for our charitable funds to allow many of these items to be available.
There are a number of laptop computers available for use. However, due to service and repair issues and variable patient numbers, we cannot guarantee that there will always be one available.
The laptops are set up to watch live TV via the internet.
Food and snacks
Inpatient catering that is tailored to suite the dietary needs of CF patients is provided. Our CF dietitians will review patients who require specific dietetic advice during their stay. There are some fridges available for patients to have in their rooms to keep food in. However, there are only a limited number, and limited space in some of the rooms prevents their use. Food may be brought and stored in the ward fridge if it has not already been into a patient’s room. Please feel free to discuss these issues with a member of the CF or ward team.
If required, our dietitians will be able to provide access to high calorie cooked breakfasts for patients.
Visiting times are 3pm-8pm, but there may be some flexibility, at the discretion of the senior ward nurse, in exceptional circumstances.
Relatives only stay over in extreme circumstances. Accommodation is available at Meller House but unfortunately there is a charge for this. Speak to the C5 isolation ward sister or the nurse in charge for more information.
Infection control is critical to everything we do. Doctors and nurses on ward rounds will always wear gown and gloves when coming in to a patient’s room. In addition they will use alcohol gel to clean their hands before and after each consultation. If you have any questions or concerns please ask a member of the CF team.
For infection control purposes, visitors are kindly asked to refrain from putting their feet on or sitting on patient's beds.
