Children's cystic fibrosis service

Southampton University Hospital Trust provides a well established regional paediatric specialist cystic fibrosis (CF) service for the south of England. The service has an experienced multidisciplinary team providing full care and shared care through a regional network of clinics according to the needs of local patients.

The service is supported by specialists in all of the wider aspects of CF care including gastroenterology, paediatric surgery, ENT (ear, nose and throat), diabetes and endocrinology. As a result our unit can accept referrals for all aspects of CF care except transplantation which is referred to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The CF service strives to achieve the highest standards of care in accordance with national recommendations. This includes detailed annual assessment of the status of all patients under our care, routine two monthly follow-up of all full care patients, strict adherence to a total segregation policy in both in-patient and out-patient settings, and the provision of well developed transitional clinics to our adult service.  As well as these routine clinics the regional centre also provides specialist joint follow-up clinics for CF related diabetes and liver disease.

All team members are involved in research and CF research is an integral part of the Respiratory Biomedical Research Unit’s programme which is hosted by our hospital Trust.  We have well developed care pathways which are based on our published CF guideline which is now in its second edition: Cystic Fibrosis Care; A Practical Guide. This book was produced entirely by SUHT health care professionals and covers all aspects of CF care.

In recent years the team has carried out a number of twinning projects to help develop CF services in other countries including Russia, Albania, India and most recently Latvia. This is now being achieved through our hospital Trust’s overseas medical group SOMED.
