Dr Ramesh Kurukulaaratchy
Dr Ramesh is consultant respiratory physician with a specialist interest in asthma and allergy. He is the clinical lead for the Respiratory Centre at Southampton General Hospital
His other positions include honorary visiting consultant in allergy at the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre at St Mary's Hospital on the Isle of Wight, and honorary senior lecturer in clinical medicine at the University of Southampton.
Dr Ramesh graduated from the University of Southampton in 1994. He went on to obtain a research fellowship at the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre, Isle of Wight, where he studied childhood asthma and allergic disease (which formed the basis of his MD thesis). He completed his specialist registrar training in respiratory medicine on the Yorkshire Training Programme, working for two years in the Leeds teaching hospitals.
Dr Ramesh is a full-time NHS consultant in respiratory and general medicine at Southampton General Hospital. His specific interests are "Difficult Asthma", Allergy, COPD and Intermediate Respiratory Care.
He has been the Clinical Lead for the Respiratory Centre (TRC) at Southampton General Hospital since 2006, during which time the range of services offered by TRC has expanded considerably. He was also lead author for joint primary/secondary care local COPD and asthma guidelines.
Dr Ramesh runs a joint Tertiary Referral Difficult Asthma Clinic at Southampton with Dr Peter Howarth, as well as Tertiary Referral Allergy Clinics alongside Dr Hasan Arshad, in both Southampton and the Isle of Wight.
Dr Ramesh also maintains an active research interest and has published 20 peer reviewed scientific papers. He remains very actively involved in the ongoing Isle of Wight Research studies looking at mechanisms of asthma and allergy development.
