Why choose us?

The Respiratory Centre is uniquely staffed by several specialist nurses and consultants, ensuring high quality care for all our patients.

The centre was established at Southampton General Hospital in the winter of 1999/2000 with the dual aims of:

  1. Preventing patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) needing to be admitted to hospital.
  2. Helping COPD patients who are admitted to hospital to get home early, with the assistance of a specialist community respiratory nursing team.

Working closely with patients and other care organisations, the Respiratory Centre has evolved considerably. It now provides a wide range of intermediate respiratory care services, from those with acute (severe and immediate) needs through to chronic (long term) problems.

Southampton has one of the lowest lengths of stay nationwide for patients with COPD and our unique admission avoidance service means that we can often offer same day appointments for patients requiring urgent reviews.
