Patient choice

If your GP decides that you need to see a specialist for further treatment, you can now choose where to have your treatment from a list of hospitals or clinics. Your GP will discuss with you the appropriate options for treating your medical condition.

These options could be NHS trusts, foundation trusts, treatment centres, private hospitals or practitioners with a special interest operating within primary care.

As well as choosing where to go, you will be able to choose when to go through the national Choose and Book system|.

Getting a second opinion

You can ask your GP or another healthcare professional for a second or further opinion (an opinion about your health condition from a different doctor). Although you do not have a legal right to a second opinion, a healthcare professional will rarely refuse to refer you for one. For more information please see NHS Choices - How do I get a second opinion?|.
