Funding and costing

Sources of funding

NIHR funding

There are several different NIHR grant programmes and details are accessible on the NIHR Website:

For more information and details of NIHR funding, contact Research Design Service South Central|.

NIHR Portfolio

The NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) Portfolio is a national data resource.  It will be used to manage the allocation of NHS infrastructure funding to Trusts and will support the performance management of NIHR CRN Coordinating Centres' Clinical Research Networks.  It is important that qualifying studies are added to the Portfolio as this is how researchers can access Service Support Costs.

The criteria for qualifying for the NIHR portfolio are twofold:

1. Funded through a NIHR funding scheme

The funding streams are listed above.

2. Funded by NIHR non-commercial partner

NIHR Partners are those organisations that:

  • award research funds as a result of open competition across England with high quality peer review; and
  • fund research that is of clear value to the NHS; and
  • have strategic direction for the research that they fund.

Full details of eligibility criteria and NIHR's current non-commercial partners| are available on the relevant part of the UKCRN website|.

Commercial research

UHS R&D welcomes research studies from the commercial sector. While the process for setting up a commercial research study is similar to that of regular research study, there are many more financial arrangments to be made.

Any matters regarding commercial research please contact Heidi Nield| commercial research manager, on 023 8079 6083.

Assessing the costs of your research

Accurate costing of research studies is very important. All the relevant costs should be captured and labelled correctly when applying for grant funding. The costs are classified under the general headings of Research Costs, Suppport Costs and Treatment Costs.

All costings can be performed using standardised costing templates used in association with the latest guidance on costs issued by the Department of Health. Commercial and Medical Device templates are available and there is a non-commercial costing template currently under development and is due to be released soon.

It is the firm advice of the R&D Office that costings should be carried out in conjunction with the R&D finance staff, and we are happy to help researcher with this. Please contact either Michelle Cawte| for advice.

Costings should be carried out at least three weeks before the submission deadlines.
