University of Southampton medical students
Student projects fall into two main categories:

Category 1: Involving UHS resources, patients, staff or premises to conduct research with human subjects or human tissue or accessing medical records or data.

Category 2: Involving human subjects or human tissue or accessing medical records or data (e.g. from another trust) but not involving UHS resources, staff or premises.
Category 1 - Involving UHS resources, patients, staff or premises

1a: Completely new research projects
-
1b: Research already ongoing at UHS where a 4th year medical student is joining the study
-
1c: Research which is already has a sponsor that is NOT UHS, or UoS (or joint), where the 4th year medical student is to conduct the study at UHS

1. Obtain sponsorship|:
2. Obtain REC approval| (if applicable MHRA, GTAC, NIGB, IRMER approval)
3. Obtain R&D Approval|:

Copy of REC approval letter, (MHRA, GTAC, NIGB, IRMER, ARSAC approval letters)

SUHT R&D non-commercial costing form
-
REC approved version of protocol
-
Site specific information form
-
Copy of REC application form
-
Completed SUHT data protection application form
-
University insurance (IRGA form)
-
Evidence of funding
-
Local patient information sheets
-
Local consent forms
-
CVs (2 page summary style) for each PI and member of research team

Invitation letter(s) (if applicable)

Contract/agreement (if required)
Send all the above documents to IVYearProject@uhs.nhs.uk| or post to the R&D office|.
1b: Research already ongoing at UHS where a 4th year medical student is joining the study
Register details with Joint R&D office:
-
4th year medical student project registration / sponsor request form (completing this form will not secure UHS or UoS sponsorship but will provide information required for insurance purposes)

University insurance (IRGA form)
1c: Research which already has a sponsor that is NOT UHS, or UoS (or joint), but where a 4th year medical student is to conduct the study at UHS
Obtain UHS R&D Approval|:

Copy of REC approval letter, (MHRA, GTAC, NIGB, IRMER, ARSAC approval letters)

2a: Completely new research projects

2b: Research already ongoing at UoS where a 4th year medical student is joining the study

2c: Research which already has a sponsor that is not UHS or UoS (or joint) where a 4th year medical student is to conduct the study at UoS
-
2d: Research to be conducted outside Southampton
Register with the University of Southampton Research Governance Office| and contact the relevant NHS trusts involved.
