Southern Daily Echo Readers' Choice Award

This award is presented to a member of hospital staff who has been nominated by readers of the Southern Daily Echo for making a difference to patients by going the extra mile.

Winner - Rosie Mitchell, staff nurse and research sister, paediatric intensive care unit (PICU)

Rosie was nominated by her colleague Sue Robson, for her dedication to fundraising.  She has raised nearly £600,000 for the Friends of PICU charity she set up five years ago.  Rosie has worked on PICU for 11 years.

Her fundraising activities include everything from stalls outside the hospital to charity balls and the money has been used to revamp and furnish the unit's family rooms.

Runner-up - Jane Winter, GI cancer lead nurse

Jane was nominated by patient Jill Spiteri, who has been diagnosed with three different cancers in just three years.  Jill believes Jane's dedication has saved her life twice. She was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2008, and during her regular follow-up appointments further cancers in her lymph nodes and lung were spotted, enabling her to get treatment straight away.

Runner-up - Ulysses Sayson, staff nurse, E5, surgery

Ulysses was nomianted by Joyce Seigers, who he looked after following an operation.  Joyce said Ulysses was a 'shining light' and helped reduce her anxiety about staying in hospital.  He also helped her cope with the prospect of having to inject herself at home.
