Training opportunities in cardiac physiology
We have a number of staff in training positions in the department.
Healthcare science assistants
Students complete a national vocational qualification (NVQ) level 3 in health and social care, run at the Wessex NVQ Centre, UHS. Students also complete the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology (SCST) award in practical electrocardiography. Some of our cardiographers are completing their health and social care NVQ part time to achieve band 3 and become healthcare science assistants.
Healthcare science associates
Students undertake a part-time foundation degree in health and social care, specialising in cardiology. This is a two year course run at Southampton Solent University. These students also complete the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology diploma in electrocardiography.
Healthcare science practitioner - practitioner training programme (PTP)
Students undertake a BSc in healthcare science, covering cardiovascular, respiratory and sleep science specialisms. The course is run at universities across England, and there is an option to take the course full-time in three years or part-time in four years. We have in-house PTP students who are completing their PTP programme part-time with the University of Southampton. We also take students on placements throughout the year during their full-time programme.
Healthcare scientist, specialising in cardiology – scientist training programme (STP)
Students undertake an MSc in clinical science, specialising in cardiology. The course if currently run at Manchester Metropolitan University and Newcastle University. We have both direct entry and internal full-time students undertaking the Masters STP programme.
