Consultant Pharmacist, Anti-infectives
My role is to continuously improve the quality of antimicrobial prescribing across the Trust. This is achieved through a combination of joint microbiology/pharmacy ward rounds, policies and guidelines, audits and analysis of prescribing data, and education and training.
I’m a member of the Trust antimicrobial management team which has developed a Trust website for infection guidelines in 2007 and a pocket guide to antimicrobial prescribing in 2008. Changes in antimicrobial prescribing at SUHT have coincided with a considerable reduction in rates of Clostridium difficile infection in 2008.
In November 2008, we implemented an electronic referral system in the Trust to allow pharmacists to formally request expert microbiology review of patients with complex infection management problems and to evaluate the outcomes.
I have a keen research interest and took four posters to the UKCPA/GHP annual conference in May 2008. I am chairperson of the UKCPA infection management group and represent pharmacy on the Health Protection Agency programme board for healthcare-associated infection. I also work with the Department of Health and the Healthcare Commission on antimicrobial prescribing policy and controls assurance.
I plan to take on a PhD student in 2009 to evaluate the impact of the antimicrobial management team and develop our research interests.
