Pharmacy at SUHT
As well as providing local hospital services to some 500,000 people, Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust provides specialist services such as neurosciences, cardiac services and children's intensive care to more than three million people in central southern England and the Channel Islands. We’re also a major centre for teaching and research in association with the University of Southampton and key partners.
Rightly, we’re very proud of our 268-strong Pharmacy team. We offer all the specialities you’d expect from one of the largest teaching hospitals in the UK. To give you an idea of the scale and scope of our highly-regarded Pharmacy work, here are a few facts and figures:

In 2002-03, the Trust spent £14.9m on drugs. By 2006-07 that had increased to £22.4m, reflecting both the quantity and the complexity of the medicines used.

The Trust currently spends £60,000 a day on drugs.

The spend on cancer care drugs has increased from £2m in 2000-01 to £6.6m currently.

The Trust has one of the most advanced automated dispensing systems (robots) in the country, helping us to provide a safe, efficient service.

The Trust's two aseptic preparation services have recently achieved the best rating possible from external auditors.
With six key departments, Patient Services|, Clinical Trials|, Technical Services|, Pharmacy Logistics|, Regional Medicines Information| and Clinical Pharmacy|, the Pharmacy team is made up of 103 pharmacists, 99 pharmacy technicians, 52 pharmacy support workers and 14 admin staff. Together, we are responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient and cost-effective use of £36 million of medicines to meet our patients’ needs.
