Antibiotic risk for c. difficile

This work was led by our consultant microbiology pharmacist. The objective was to evaluate clinical outcomes in patients treated with low-risk antibiotics compared to patients treated with high-risk antibiotics. The results showed that there was a tendency to over-prescribe high risk antibiotics and that patients prescribed with high risk antibiotics did not achieve a superior outcome for patients with pneumonia. It is hoped that with this knowledge, increased use of low risk antibiotic will result in a decreased incidence of c. difficile.
