Nursing careers and benefits at UHS

Teaching presentationWe know that there is a direct link between the quality of patient care and the education and training of staff. We want to deliver the very best outcomes for our patients so we have put personal and professional development at the top of our agenda.

As well as supporting non-practising nurses to return to nursing, we provide all qualified nurses with a highly supportive induction including study and development days relevant to your grade, following by ongoing mentorship.

There are regular training and development opportunities as nurses are actively encouraged to develop new skills and may undertake expanded roles on completion of a comprehensive competency programme.

Some departments run rotational programmes for junior nurses through the different ward environments, and for more experienced nurses there are leadership and development days.

Many courses are run by our Education team and by the School of Health Sciences of the University of Southampton, to help you develop your clinical and leadership skills. For those wishing to take an academic route, diploma, degree and masters programmes are available, and we also encourage attendance at national conferences to further develop your all-round knowledge and understanding of relevant issues.
