Norma Diaper, lead clinical educator
As lead clinical educator, Norma caters for the education and training needs of staff in the facility, NIHR Biomedical Research Centre and NIHR Respiratory BRU, supporting the wider research nursing teams to undertake high quality research in line with good clinical practice (ICH GCP), developing evidence based nursing practice.
Meeting staff training needs
Norma links closely with the senior nursing team and quality assurance lead to identify training needs at an early stage to maintain and improve staff competencies. She provides research and Trust related updates, as well as maintaining statutory and mandatory training requirements and promoting opportunities for ongoing academic development.
She is responsible for ensuring that new staff, students and study investigators who use the research facilities have had appropriate induction to ensure both their own safety and that of research participants.
Maintaining research standards
Norma facilitates the formal induction, education and research governance sessions available to all research staff, and supports medical and nursing students within the facility. She has also been actively involved in developing a training programme that will result in UHS clinical trials assistants gaining a National Care Certificate.
Norma represents the department within the Trust’s Nursing & Midwifery Training & Development group and assists with the interviewing process at the University of Southampton for the future nursing students. Nationally, Norma is a member of the UKCRFN Education Work Stream group to influence standards within UK clinical research facilities.
Norma was employed as a research nurse for over 11 years before becoming a Senior Research Sister in 2010, and became lead clinical educator in 2015. Norma’s original nursing qualification was obtained in Southampton and she has co-authored a number of papers in peer reviewed journals.
