Epic rowing success for fundraising team
Description
Congratulations have been pouring in for a team of doctors and nurses who completed a monumental fundraising row from Jersey to Southampton in aid of the children emergency department. The team rowed their way into the history books after completing the 200km journey from Jersey to Southampton in a feat never before attempted. Dubbed the 'J2S' it was even described as 'epic' by Olympic hero Sir Steve Redgrave. The group arrived at Ocean Village at 2am on Saturday, earlier than originally planned as a poor weather forecast forced them to set off ahead of schedule. A reception was then held for them on Saturday evening at Harbour Lights cinema in Ocean Village to toast their success. Team member Rob Stockbridge said: "Coming up Southampton water in the middle of the night and against the tide seemed to take an age but we were thrilled and spurred on but so many family and friends still waiting for us at 1.30am when we came into Ocean Village. "Seeing so many people both then and on Saturday evening was the perfect end to an amazing challenge. On behalf of the team we would like to thank our family and friends for their support and colleagues across the Trust for their help in making this happen.” Fellow team member David James added: "After facing the initial challenge of beating the weather, we set off in the middle of the night already sleep deprived! We followed our shift plan of rowing and had some beautiful moments such as dawn breaking and the moment we came in past the needles. There were a few less beautiful moments such as moving between boats in the middle of the channel and getting round Calshot spit in the dark, tired and with a container ship on our tail! Overall though, a once in a lifetime opportunity, such a great team and delighted to raise so much money for this great cause.” Congratulations to the team have been sent by Peter Hollins on behalf of the University Hospital Southampton Foundation Trust Board. Writing to the lead organiser for the row Jason Barling, Mr Hollins said: "On behalf of Trust Board I wanted both to congratulate and thank you and your crew for the epic row from Jersey to Southampton, and the amount you have raised towards the Children’s Emergency appeal. "It’s just terrific that given the amount of hard work you and your colleagues put into UHS anyway that you should have added the effort, sweat and time necessary to achieve something like this. Suzie Simmons, Head of fundraising for Southampton Hospital Charity said: "Congratulations to our 11 emergency and trama staff for taking on this challenge and ariving home safe and sound. They have completed something never before attempted, which is amazing, and they have already smashed their £20,000 fundraising target." You can still support the event by sponsoring the team here
