Our team

Dr Luise Marino (PhD)
Chief paediatric dietitian - paediatric intensive care, gastroenterology and nutrition support team

Luise joined the Trust in June 2013. She spent 15 years working in academic hospitals in South Africa, including four years as the dietetic manager at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Cape Town. Luise completed a MMed Sci, focusing on delayed gastric emptying in severe head injuries, and a PhD fellowship within the department of paediatrics, Imperial College London. This focused on HSP70 and the relationship to glutamine in the critically ill child.

Luise has published several peer reviewed articles and book chapters, and is involved in collaborative research projects within the Children’s Hospital. Her research interests include developing nutrition care pathways for patient benefit and novel nutrition support in critically ill children.

Anita Emm
Highly specialist paediatric dietitan - cardiology and neonates

Anita has a broad experience of paediatric dietetics. She provides the dietetic service to the level 3 neonatal unit in the Princess Anne Hospital, and to our renowned children’s heart service. Anita is actively involved in national initiatives to improve dietetic care. She is a founder member of Dietitians Interested in Cardiology, and is chair of UK and Ireland Neonatal Dietitians Interest Group.

Caroline Fealey
Specialist paediatric dietitian - oncology

Caroline completed an undergraduate degree at Cardiff University, followed by a postgraduate dietetic qualification from Leeds Metropolitan University. She has worked as a paediatric dietitian in Southampton since 2002, across many different paediatric specialties. Caroline is part of the regional paediatric oncology team and is a member of the national Paediatric Oncology Dietitians Interest Group.

Kim Novell
Highly specialist paediatric dietitian - ketogenic diet and inherited metabolic diseases

Kim joined the team in February 2012, and has worked in paediatric dietetics for six years. She is currently working with the new ketogenic diet service for children with difficult to control epilepsy, and in the dietary treatment of children with inherited metabolic diseases. Working with children and their families to individually tailor diets to their requirements, Kim provides advice and support to help them adapt to dietary changes. She has also worked with children with a range of gastrointestinal conditions, including intestinal failure.

An active member of the British Dietetic Association, Kim has contributed to the paediatric chapter in the Manual of Dietetic Practice. She is currently completing her MSc advanced clinical practice in paediatric dietetics.

Natalie Davies
Specialist paediatric dietitian - gastroenterology and allergy

Natalie joined us in May 2014, and specialises in paediatric gastroenterology and paediatric allergy. She studied at the University of Chester, qualifying as a dietitian in 2010. Natalie has worked in paediatric dietetics for three years and thoroughly enjoys her work. She is currently completing her masters in advanced professional practice - paediatric dietetics at the University of Plymouth, and is an active member of the paediatric group of the British Dietetic Association.

Dr Caroline Anderson (PhD)
Highly specialist paediatric dietitian

Caroline joined the team in 2000. She has spent 21 years working in the NHS, and the last 19 in paediatrics at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Portsmouth and here. Caroline completed her PhD in energy expenditure and requirements in children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) at the University of Southampton. This also focused on nutritional intake and body composition.

Caroline has published several peer reviewed papers, and is an active member of the paediatric renal nutrition group (PRING), holding several key positions including chair and secretary. She is also the allied health professionals representative on the national paediatric renal peer review working group.

Her research interests include improving the nutritional quality of care to children with CKD, patient centred care, nutritional support, energy expenditure and requirements and body composition in children with CKD.

Rebecca Weeks
Highly specialist paediatric dietitian - diabetes

Rebecca graduated from King's College London in 2002 and has specialised in paediatric dietetics since 2003. She joined our team in 2007, with experience gained in several large NHS London teaching hospitals as well as the private sector. Rebecca completed an MSc in public health nutrition in 2012. She has been part of various clinical teams at the Trust, and now leads the paediatric diabetes dietetic service. This supports a large number of children on insulin pump therapy. Rebecca also maintains an interest in paediatric allergy.

Sian Phillips
Specialist paediatric dietitian - respiratory and cystic fibrosis

Sian qualified as a dietitian from London Metropolitan University in 2011, and joined us as a paediatric dietitian in April 2013. She provides a dietetic service to cystic fibrosis, respiratory, neurology and the high dependency unit. Sian has developed a keen interest in cystic fibrosis and is actively involved in research in this area. She has presented at local study days on cystic fibrosis, and is an active member of the paediatric group of the British Dietetic Association and the UK Cystic Fibrosis Dietitians' Interest Group.

Teresa Curbishley
Highly specialist paediatric dietitian - cystic fibrosis, ketogenic diet and inherited metabolic disease

Teresa qualified as a dietitian from the University of North London in 2001. She developed an interest in paediatrics whilst on clinical placement, and soon after qualifying joined our paediatric cystic fibrosis team. Teresa has presented at national and international conferences and is an active member of the British Dietetic Association and Cystic Fibrosis Dietitians' Interest Group. She also has experience in paediatric gastroenterology and nephrology. More recently, Teresa has developed a keen interest in dietary treatment for inherited disorders of metabolism and the use of the ketogenic diet in epilepsy.

David Hopkins
Specialist paediatric dietitian - renal

David joined the Trust in 2012 and is an experienced paediatric dietitian with over 20 years of experience. He currently works as a paediatric renal dietitian, but has experience in many other areas. David has published a number of peer reviewed articles and book chapters, in addition to presenting at local and international congresses.

Joan Gavin
Specialist paediatric dietitian - gastroenterology

Joan has worked at Southampton’s Children’s Hospital for the last 20 years. She is a specialist dietitian with extensive experience in food allergy, feeding behaviour problems and gastroenterology.

Joan has a master's degree in applied paediatric nutrition and has published a number of peer reviewed articles and book chapters, in addition to presenting at local and international congresses. She is a member of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, a food allergy and intolerance dietitian group and the paediatric group of the British Dietetic Association.
