Prof Hasan Arshad, research lead for allergies, immunity and infection
A respiratory consultant and researcher, Prof Arshad uses new approaches to predict, prevent and treat asthma and allergic diseases including controlling exposure to allergens (immunotherapy).
Prof Arshad is investigating prevention of asthma using allergen immunotherapy, genetic and environmental risk factors for allergy development, improved food allergy diagnostics, and is trialing new treatments for asthma and food allergy.
Asthma and allergy prevention
Professor Arshad is investigating prevention of asthma using allergen immunotherapy in infancy, assessing complete avoidance of allergens in early life, as well as controlled exposure to allergens.
Better diagnoses for food allergies
Specific diagnosis of food allergies is problematic, and Prof Arshad is working on new approaches to this.
New therapies for asthma and allergy
Prof Arshad leads clinical trials evaluating new treatments for asthma and various allergies, testing therapeutics that have shown evidence of better managing these conditions, more cost-effectively.
Working with families on the Isle of Wight
Prof Arshad works closely with the Isle of Wight birth cohort, a large group of families on the Isle of Wight who have participated in asthma and allergy research for many years, enabling valuable insights into the nature and management of allergies and allergic asthma.
This group is central to Prof Arshad’s identification of key genetic and environmental risk factors for the development of asthma and allergy, and an 18 year follow-up of an allergy prevention study that used strict allergen avoidance in early life.
