Update from the Wessex adult cystic fibrosis centre - 30 March 2017

As you may know, over the last few months we have been reviewing how cystic fibrosis care is provided for adults living in Dorset. This became necessary because of staffing challenges at Poole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (PHFT) which meant that the service there was unsustainable in the long-term.

While this review takes place we have made short-term arrangements so that we can continue to provide care safely. Since February, inpatient care has been provided at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) while outpatient clinics have continued to be based in Poole but provided by the Southampton team.

Unfortunately from the end of April, PHFT will no longer provide us with the space required to continue offering outpatient clinics in this way. We’ve looked at alternative venues but none are able to provide the facilities we need and because of this there is currently no other option but for all outpatient appointments to be held at UHS from the beginning of May.

We’re still exploring all of the options available to us and our preference would be to provide outpatient clinics for Wessex patients in a location near their homes, however this is proving to be very difficult.

We’re currently conducting a survey to understand more about patient needs and how the Wessex adult cystic fibrosis centre can be improved. This is due to close on Friday, 31 March and we’d encourage anyone who hasn’t taken part yet to share their views. The results will help us to determine our long-term arrangements which we’re hoping to be able to share with you in the next few weeks.
