Press release: Hospital trust announces appointment of new chief executive

ED_01_Paula Head_Chief ExecutiveUniversity Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust has announced the appointment of a new chief executive.

Paula Head, current chief executive of Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, will take up the post on 1 September following the departure of Fiona Dalton, who left for Providence Healthcare in Vancouver, Canada in March.

Ms Head began her career as a pharmacist and took on her first board role at Kingston Hospital. Following senior roles at NHS East Berkshire and Frimley Park Hospital, she was appointed to her first chief executive role at Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust before moving to her current post.

Ms Head lives in Hampshire and has a daughter studying medicine at the University of Southampton.

"I am delighted to be appointed chief executive of UHS, an organisation I have followed closely over recent years,” she said.

"I have been extremely impressed with the trust's progress in the face of significant pressures across the NHS and that is a credit to dedicated and passionate staff on the ground making that possible.”

She added: "I am very much looking forward to becoming part of the team in Southampton and I hope we are able to enjoy many successes together in the future."

Peter Hollins, chair of UHS, said: “Paula has widespread experience of the NHS having worked in acute hospitals, commissioning and in a community trust, as well as having led a substantial acute trust through a turnaround.

“I am convinced she has both the values and ambition to take UHS into an even more exciting future.”

Interim chief executive David French will remain at UHS as chief financial officer.
