Cancer research

The Trust hosts some of the country’s leading cancer research, in partnership with the University of Southampton's School of Cancer Sciences, Cancer Research UK and Blood Cancer UK.

If you would like to get involved in shaping how we do our cancer research, you can join our cancer research patient and public involvement (PPI) group.

The CRUK Centre at Southampton

The Centre brings together scientists, doctors and nurses using the latest research to explore better ways of diagnosing and treating cancer, for people in Southampton and beyond.

The centre is a partnership between University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, the University of Southampton and Cancer Research UK.

Researchers in the centre work on many types of cancer, and are especially interested in lymphoma, lung, breast, oesophageal, colorectal and head and neck cancers

There is particular expertise in how we can use the body’s immune system to treat cancer, concentrated in the Centre for Cancer Immunology

Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre

The Southampton ECMC is where new types of treatment are developed.  There is particular expertise in immunotherapy, bringing together laboratory and clinical research teams to develop new treatments for all types of cancer.

The ECMC works with the specialised medical imaging, cellular therapy and radiopharmacy facilities and hosts a Human Tissue Association (HTA)-accredited tissue bank.

Southampton Clinical Trials Unit

The Southampton Clinical Trials Unit leads trials testing new types of treatment and diagnostic tests in large numbers of people, across the UK and internationally. They have experts in statistics and data analysis to make sure we have the best evidence to guide the care of people with cancer.
