Getting medical attention over Christmas

Christmas dinner

If you need medical attention over the Christmas period, there are a number of different services you can use to help you get the treatment you need faster.

Please remember our emergency department is for life threatening emergencies only. If you need advice or treatment but your injury isn’t life threatening, please select the most appropriate service below.

Minor burns, sprains or broken bones?

The urgent treatment centre (UTC) at Royal South Hants Hospital offers treatment, advice and information on a range of minor injuries and you don’t need to book an appointment. The UTC can stitch and close wounds, xray arms and legs, remove foreign bodies from ears, noses, etc and treat bites from insects and animals.

This service will be open on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

  • Monday to Friday, 7.30 to 10pm
  • Weekends and bank holidays, 8am to 10pm

The last patient is accepted at 9.30pm. Find out more on www.royalsouthhantsutc.nhs.uk.

Not sure where to go?

NHS 111 is a free-to-call helpline that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Call 111 if:

  • you need medical help fast, but it’s not a life threatening emergency
  • you don’t know who to call, you’re not registered at a GP or your GP practice is closed
  • you are unsure if you need to go to emergency department
  • you need medical advice or reassurance about what to do next

Where possible, advisers can book you an appointment or transfer your call to the service you need. If they think you need an ambulance, they will arrange for one to be sent to you.

You can also use the 111 service through textphone by calling 18001 111 or via the website 111.nhs.uk.

Get help from your local pharmacy

Pharmacists are experts in medicines and can help you with minor health concerns. They can offer advice and over-the-counter medicines for a range of minor illnesses.

A number of pharmacies will be open on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day.

Book an appointment with your GP

GP appointments are available across Southampton, 8am to 9pm every day of the week, including weekends and bank holidays.

These appointments will either be at the GP surgery you are registered at or at one of the GP hubs around Southampton. Book an appointment through your GP surgery or, if outside of your GP's opening hours, by phoning 111.
