Identifying risks early: Nutrition and epigenetic biomarkers
We are investigating embryonic and foetal responses to maternal diet and lifestyle at the molecular level, studying epigenetic factors (influencers of gene expression) as indicators of these responses and of later life risk of disease.
Key investigator: Professor Mark Hanson
Progress to date
Having completed initial epigenetic biomarker replication we have successfully identified a set of epigenetic marks predictive of later obesity and cardiovascular risk.
A new contract with the private sector has been secured to plan a pre-pregnancy intervention study, which is now being initiated.
Additional collaborative grant applications have been submitted.
