Experience

Dr Bate is a paediatric oncologist who joined the Trust in 2015. She's also an honorary senior clinical lecturer at the University of Southampton in recognition of her research activity.

Dr Bate cares for children with all kinds of cancers, but she has a particular interest in bone and soft tissue sarcomas.

Research

Dr Bate been researching infections in children with cancer since 2009, and has published extensively on this topic. You can read about one of Dr Bate's studies on the BBC website. She's also been awarded a National Institute of Health Research grant for £175,000 for a clinical trial investigating ways to prevent chickenpox in children with cancer.

At a national level, Dr Bate was involved in the clinical trial management for the IMPORT Wilms Tumour study, where she co-led site initiation visits for all the CCLG centres in the UK and provided clinical input to the trial. During her research post at UCL, she established a parent (PPI) group to discuss research priorities for Wilms Tumour research.

Since then, she has published a guide to PPI for paediatric research in collaboration with NIHR INVOLVE. Her most recent appointment as the first National Ewing’s Sarcoma MDT research fellow has given her further experience of research and policy change at a national level.

She has led on an international consensus meeting on local therapy for Ewing sarcoma in June 2017 and established a new and very active patient/parent advisory group for her research.

In December 2017, Dr Bate was awarded a Children's Cancer and Leukaemia Group research grant to evaluate the impact of national advisory panels for childhood cancer.
