Breast service

The Southampton breast unit is a long-established specialist unit. We receive almost 8,000 symptomatic referrals a year and offer breast screening to 100,000 people registered as female across 60 GP practices.

Our service specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of both benign (non-cancerous) breast disorders and breast cancer. Our multidisciplinary team (MDT) includes breast surgeons, radiologists, oncologists, pathologists, breast cancer clinical nurse specialists, allied health care professional support and administrative staff. These specialists work closely together to provide expert evidenced-based care for our patients.

We also have close links with our plastic surgery colleagues and hold joint clinics for specialist reconstructive advice following breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Cosmetic breast surgery (breast surgery to improve appearance in those without breast cancer) is not performed in Southampton. Some more specialised plastic surgical procedures for example free flap (DIEP) reconstructions are performed by the plastic surgical team in Salisbury.

We provide clinics for those referred by their GP with breast symptoms, in addition to a busy breast screening service, family history service and follow up clinics. Our clinical nurse specialist team provide invaluable support for our patients and their families. Breast surgery is undertaken using the latest oncoplastic techniques and oncology treatments are offered locally where possible.

UHS is a large teaching hospital. You may have medical, nursing and radiology trainees and students in clinics when you attend.

Many improvements in care and outcomes have been led by research. We are a research active team and you may be offered to participate and contribute to one of the many research studies or trials we are involved in.
