Fetal medicine unit
We're the regional centre for fetal medicine, looking after parents and babies from Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands and even the Falkland Islands.
Our team might look after you if you have a high-risk or problematic pregnancy, and we see women who may be carrying a baby with an abnormality. This could be a structural problem (for example, a cleft lip, heart defect or kidney problems), or growth or development problems.
We also see women who have already had babies with abnormalities, or who have a family history of genetic problems.
We perform scans and other tests to tell us more about your baby's problem so that we can plan the right care for you and your baby for the rest of your pregnancy. We work closely with other teams such as neonatologists, paediatric cardiologists and paediatric surgeons who can help care for your baby before and after delivery. Occasionally, we might offer treatment before your baby is born.
We have an important role as a teaching unit for specialists in training, midwives, sonographers and medical students, and we are also active in research.
