We provide radiological support to the Wessex cardiothoracic centre, and support the diagnostic tests and treatment carried out in the cardiac catheter labs and cardiac MRI scanner at the hospital.
Our diagnostic radiographers provide the x-ray service for the cardiothoracic care group. We use x-ray to gain information about the size and shape of your heart, and to check on the condition of your lungs.
We have several mobile x-ray machines which we use to x-ray patients on the ward following surgery or other procedures.
We also provide the radiographic service for the cardiac catheter labs at Southampton General Hospital, where adults and children with heart disease are diagnosed and treated. Some of this is emergency treatment, and our service runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
MRI scans can produce detailed information about your heart and the blood vessels it supplies. You can read more about cardiac MRI in our patient information leaflet.
