Intensive care
Our intensive care facilities across Southampton General and the Princess Anne hospitals provide a variety of specialist services.
Cardiac intensive care unit
Our cardiac intensive care unit looks after people who are seriously ill with heart problems, usually after or immediately before having open heart surgery.
Critical care unit
You'll come to critical care if you need close and constant monitoring, special equipment to support your organs, and medicine to keep your body functioning normally while you recover.
General intensive care unit
We look after people who are seriously ill. We normally take patients who have just had major or specialised surgery, or people who have come into hospital in an emergency with respiratory failure, major trauma, sepsis or post cardiac arrest.
Neonatal intensive care unit
We provide specialist care to sick term and preterm (premature) newborn babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Neurosciences intensive care unit
Our neurosciences intensive care unit (NICU) provides specialised intensive care for patients who have a severe illness or injury affecting their brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves.

We're the lead centre for paediatric intensive care in South Central England, and care for children from birth up to 18 years of age with some of the most complex illnesses and injuries.
