Education and training (radiotherapy physics)

The education and training lead for radiotherapy physics is Jen Lowe (principal clinical scientist), email Jennifer.lowe@uhs.nhs.uk or call 023 8120 8503.

The radiotherapy physics group is accredited to support national training programmes including the Scientist Training Programme (STP) (for both rotations and specialism), the Higher Specialist Training Programme (HSST) and the IPEM Clinical Technologist training scheme.

We also train linac engineers on the Radiation Engineering Healthcare Science Practitioner (Clinical Engineering) degree apprenticeship.

We contribute to the training of our multi-disciplinary colleagues such as treatment planning placements for students' radiographers from both UWE and AECC, and medical physics teaching to radiologists (FRCR part 1) and oncologists (FRCR part 1 and 2).

Our staff also contribute to lecturing to undergraduate physicists at the University of Southampton for the medical physics module and supervise BSc and MSc projects:

The medical physics department holds monthly scientific seminars which all staff within medical physics can attend. These provide the platform for staff to present on any research or development projects they are undertaking. It's also an opportunity to feedback new developments from the wider scientific community following attendance at external scientific meetings.

In radiotherapy physics we have a journal club and regular case-based discussions of recent treatment plans.
