Genetics

June 2020 - Covid-19 update

Due to the current demands on the hospital, we are making significant changes to the genetics outpatient services. Currently, we are offering patients who have an appointment booked with clinical genetics a video-consultation or, if this is not possible, a telephone appointment. In some circumstances, face to face appointments at the hospital may be offered.

Patients should receive a letter with instructions about video clinics or letting them know if their appointment has been changed. If you have any questions regarding an upcoming appointment, and you have not received any information two weeks prior to the appointment, please contact the clinical genetics department on 023 8120 6170.

Please only come to the genetics department or your local hospital outpatient department for genetics appointments if instructed to do so.

The genetics laboratory is only testing urgent samples at the present time. All non-urgent samples which are received will be stored, but not tested during this period. This means that test results will be delayed for all non-urgent testing. If your test is not urgent, we ask that you do not attend hospital for a blood test at the present time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding at this challenging time.

Further advice and support

The Unique charity have published some general advice relating to Covid-19, as well as a practical guide for families while staying at home, on their website.

The British Society for Genetic Medicine (BSGM) have also created a document for general advice regarding coronavirus (Covid-19) for patients with rare genetic disorders.

Our service

Our specialist service diagnoses genetic disorders that affect all ages and body systems. We help people who:

  • are worried that a particular condition or disease in their family may affect them or their children
  • have a genetic condition and need specialist advice
  • have children with medical or learning difficulties and want to know if there are genetic factors involved
  • are expecting a baby and want to discuss an abnormal test result and find out what options are available.

Our genetic counsellors provide patients with the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their own future.

We also work with other services to provide specialist clinics for various conditions, including inherited cardiac conditions, eye genetics, endocrine disorders, neurogenetics, von Hippel Lindau disease, orthopaedic conditions and metabolic bone disease.
