Global shortage of bone cement

There is currently a global shortage of medical bone cement, a material used in some orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacements.

What has happened

One of the major international manufacturers temporarily paused production following a packaging fault. Although production has now restarted, supplies remain limited across the UK and are expected to be affected over the coming weeks.

This national issue is being coordinated by NHS England, and like other NHS trusts, University Hospital Southampton has measures in place to ensure patient safety and continuity of urgent care.

Impact on our patients and services

There is currently no planned disruption to our provision of joint replacement surgeries or procedures although the situation will be closely monitored over coming weeks.

Should this situation change, we will contact any affected patients directly.

Thank you for your support and understanding.
