Open Day 2018

More than 6,000 people enjoyed an action-packed open day staged by University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

Visitors were given unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to departments across Southampton General Hospital.

Activities included becoming an honorary emergency department nurse for the day, using microscopic cameras, trying on operating scrubs and finding out about pioneering research.

Visitors also got the chance to explore emergency vehicles including a brand new air ambulance.

The event was opened by new CEO Paula Head, who introduced teen singing sensation Donel Mangena as the new ambassador for Southampton Children’s Hospital. Donel, who was runner-up in The Voice UK2018, performed an acoustic version of his latest single before posing for photos with fans.

He said: “This followed a visit I made here recently to the children’s wards as a new ambassador for the hospital and it was super cool to follow that up at the open day. “Everyone seemed so happy and it was a really colourful and fun day.”

Ms Head said: “The open day was a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together to find

out more about the work of the trust while taking part in a host of fun and educational activities.

“There was a great atmosphere throughout the day and I’d like to thank everyone involved for making it such a success.”

Writing on social media, visitors described how much they had learned about what goes on inside a hospital while others spoke of being inspired into a medical career as a result of the hands-on activities they had tried out.
