Celebrating 70 years of the NHS in England and 70 years of Southampton General Hospital

On 5 July 2018, trusts around England celebrated 70 years since the launch of the NHS and the achievements of this amazing service. 2018 also marks an important milestone in the history of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, with it being 70 years since the Borough Hospital (as it was known in 1948) became Southampton General Hospital.

Westquay - happy birthday to the NHS in Hampshire!

Westquay shopping centre in Southampton played host to our birthday open day on Saturday 23 June, showcasing the work carried out by the NHS across Hampshire.

Shoppers were keen to find out more about the work that goes on across the county by various Trusts and NHS bodies. Visitors had the chance to try their hand at CPR, take part in a research-style experiment, write a birthday wish to the NHS and find out more about the jobs that are available within the organisation.

NHS party at UHS

Parties were staged across UHS sites, with the main event taking place on 5 July outside Southampton General Hospital.

Guests enjoyed a host of party games, face painting and also had a chance to look at memorabilia that had been collected from over the past seven decades and send a birthday wish to the NHS.

NHS70 celebration service

In recognition of 70 years of the NHS, Winchester Cathedral hosted a multi-trust celebration service for staff (past and present) and the public on 5 July. Staff working in the NHS were invited to attend the service for free, and friends and family were also welcomed.

The service saw UHS staff members Arlene Brady and Claire Shields (pictured in slideshow below) read inspiring testimonials on what celebrating the NHS at 70 means to them. There was also a performance from the Trust's Filipino choir.

Design a birthday cake competition

As part of our celebrations, we ran an art competition for local schools and community groups to design us a birthday cake that reflects the diversity and history of the NHS, with the winning design kindly baked by the The Flutterby Cake Co. and presented at an event.
