Smith, Dr Trevor
Inflammatory bowel disease, clinical nutrition and intestinal failure.
Dr Smith is a consultant in gastroenterology and intestinal failure at Southampton General Hospital. He has worked in Southampton since 2010, having previously held a consultant post at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital since 2006. Dr Smith's role includes a mix of in-patient ward work, outpatient clinics and endoscopy. He looks after patients with a range of gastrointestinal problems, but has a specialist interest in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and those with complex gut problems that require long term artificial nutrition support. Together with his colleague Dr Mike Stroud, Dr Smith leads a large regional intestinal failure unit for patients receiving long term parenteral nutrition.
Dr Smith has a national role leading and delivering clinical nutrition and intestinal failure services. He chairs the British Artificial Nutrition Survey, and is a senior executive officer of the British Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. He is also leading the introduction of a national intestinal failure patient registry which will audit and publish outcomes on patients with intestinal failure treated in UK hospitals.
With an active research interest in clinical nutrition, Dr Smith recruits patients to studies of oral and enteral and parenteral nutrition support. He has completed a research fellowship at the Institute of Human Nutrition (University of Southampton), and continues to have a productive collaboration with colleagues at the university and Nutrition Biomedical Research Centre.
