Pathology

Update on service during Covid-19 pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has placed unprecedented demands on UHS pathology, as we respond to the reconfiguration of services required to support the NHS. Clinicians within UHS pathology are continuously reviewing current service provision to meet the needs of patients, ensuring that testing required for immediate patient management is prioritised. It follows that some lower priority work will have to be deferred.

Due to the rapid pace of change it is not possible to give full details of the services affected at any moment in time, but examples of services that could be deferred can be found in the RCPath guidance (prepared in association with NHSI&E and the professional bodies) at the link below.

Guidance for pathology testing prioritisation

As always, clinicians are available to offer a clinical advisory service. Contact details are published in the laboratory handbooks on our website.

Our service

Pathology is the branch of medicine concerned with the cause, origin and nature of disease. Our main service is based at Southampton General Hospital. We provide laboratory plus full clinical diagnostic and advisory services.
