Surgery school

Following the decision being made with you and your consultant to proceed to surgery, you will be referred to our ‘fit 4 surgery school’. The school consists of a two hour session where we will advise you on the things you can do to improve your physical fitness prior to surgery.

During the session we will discuss what to expect when you come into hospital, preoperative diet and nutrition, exercise, smoking and alcohol intake.

Our sessions are presented by nurses, physiotherapists and dietitians who all work on the surgical wards and can answer any questions you may have.

Around ten to 15 patients attend each session, and we encourage you to bring a friend or family member with you.

You'll receive an appointment in the post regarding your surgery school date. If you are unable to attend please let us know and we can rearrange for you.

It is important that you attend the surgery school session as early as possible before your planned surgery, as this will give you more time to prepare yourself using what you learn.
