Trauma and orthopaedics
We have a team of highly specialised consultants, many of whom are nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise and experience. Our consultants are supported by nurses, therapists and other specialist clinical staff who are also experts in their field of orthopaedic care.
We are leading the way in innovative procedures including minimally invasive surgery, hip resurfacing and computer-navigated surgery. Our role as a teaching hospital and work in research and development help to keep us at the forefront of new developments and treatments.
Our service can be spilt into several areas:
- Major hip and knee joint replacements and revisions
- Hand, wrist and elbow surgery
- Shoulder surgery
- Foot and ankle surgery
- Trauma surgery including treating fractured neck of femur
- Pelvic fractures
- Spinal surgery

Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre (HOC)
The Hampshire Orthopaedic Centre, opening in summer 2025, will improve access to elective surgery and reduce the elective backlog across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It will provide more capacity, running five days a week with consultants from both Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University Hospital Southampton operating at the facility.
Adults across Hampshire and Isle of Wight who require orthopaedic operations (such as hip and knee replacements) may be suitable to attend the new facility, which will feature 16 single patient rooms, two orthopaedic theatres, and multiple four-bedded patient bays.
