National Institute for Health Research Southampton Biomedical Research Centre : NIHR BRC Theme Lead National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) Theme Lead (2022-2027) for the NIHR Southampton BRC Theme Lead role is subject to the University Hospital Southampton (UHS) and the University of Southampton (UoS) partnership being awarded a BRC from 2022. Role holder will act as BRC Theme Lead Designate from appointment in 2020, leading the preparations for their theme and submission of the Southampton NIHR BRC 2022-2027 application. The role will formally start on 1st October 2020 for a term of 30 months. JOB ROLE Role Title NIHR BRC Theme Lead Accountable to BRC Director Hours / Duration It is anticipated theme leadership duties will be acknowledged within job plans and should not exceed 2 PAs per week. Role holders will act as theme leads /theme lead designates in the lead up to the NIHR Southampton BRC 2022-2027 competition and thereafter, subject to the relevant theme being awarded as part of an overall successful application for a BRC from 2022. Postholders will be appointed for 30 months fixed term contract, renewable for a further 30 months subject to the agreement of the UHS/UoS Parntership (total 5 years). Postholders will be eligible for reappointment subject to an open selection process by the UHS/UoS Parntership. BRC Themes: overall purpose Each Theme (or potential theme) will have an identified Theme Lead, who is at the forefront of their field. The Theme Lead must meet, or have a realistic prospect of meeting in the near future, any criteria set by the NIHR for BRC theme leads. The BRC Theme Lead are accountable to the BRC Director/Director Designate and BRC Strategy and Managment Board for the delivery of their scientific programme, as outlined in the NIHR BRC Application and approved by the JSRB and NIHR, taking account the resources awarded by NIHR. Each Theme/potential theme will have specific aims and objectives as well as a research strategy. The Theme Lead will collaborate, integrate and promote scientific excellence in core BRC research platforms and affiliated projects led by University and/or Trust investigators. The Theme Lead will advise the BRC Strategy and Management Board on the progress, and key issues which may affect the delivery of their scientific Theme. Main Purpose: 1. To lead the development and delivery of the scientific programme of research in their designated Research (or Cross-Cutting) theme, convening regular meetings of Research Area leads, PPIEP industry training and other relevant leads and other core research programme members. 2. Contribute to the overall strategic management of the BRC in conjunction with the Director collaborating and coordinating activities with other themes ensuring regular attendance at the BRC Strategy and Management Board for this purpose. 3. To determine resources required to develop and deliver projects and research activities within their Theme, ensuring budgets are realistic, provide value for money and appropriately managed to ensure financial balance. To work with the BRC Manager to ensure necessary BRC co-funding requirement is secured. 4. Work with the Theme specific Research Area Leads to ensure the effective design and delivery of research on time, to target and within budget. 5. Deliver growth within the research programme in line with NIHR expectations, increasing the volume of high-quality research (mainly translational and experimental medicine) delivered and associated patient recruitment, publications, impact and external income. 6. Work with the named NIHR BRC Training Lead to develop and deliver theme-specific capacity development plans. This will include individuals supported to complete post-graduate research training (DM and PhD), post-doctoral development programme and internship programmes and other related training activities. 7. Work closely with the named PPIEP lead to ensure PPIEP is integral to all stages of the research life cycle. 8. Work closely with the named Industry lead to ensure that industry engagement and partnership are integral to all stages of the research life cycle. 9. To ensure the Theme’s research programme incorporates opportunities to engage relevant NIHR infrastructure elements which include CRF, TRCs, ARC WESSEX, NIHR BioResources and NIHR CRUK CTU. Where relevant, to link with other NIHR infrastructures that is theme specific (e.g. Nutrtion links with DART, Data Science links with HIC). 10. To engage with other participants in the translational pathway, in particular basic scientists within University of Southampton and implementation specialists within ARC Wessex. 11. To develop the Theme’s research programme to incorporate opportunities to engage relevant academics from HEIs, NHS Trusts, public health, local authorities and the third sector where applicable including promoting cross-disciplinary working. 12. Be responsible for the timely completion of periodic internal reports and annual plans in accordance with NIHR timescales for their respective Theme and overarching NIHR BRC annual report. 13. Identify the need for any significant changes to the Theme strategy, and seek approval from the NIHR BRC Management and Strategy Board for any proposed changes. 14. Contribute to the integrated approach to research governance and management upholding standards of good governance within the BRC. 15. To lead on, or contribute, as appropriate, to the leadership of cross-BRC programmes of work in areas of thematic or research specialism (as the opportunity arises). To ensure their Theme participates in cross-BRC collaborative work programmes. 16. To contribute to the development and delivery of BRC external engagement strategy in order to enhance external understanding and appreciation of the BRC locally, regionally, nationally and globally. 17. To deputise for the BRC Director at regional and national meetings and events as necessary. Enc C NIHR ARC Wessex Deputy Director: Call for Expressions of Interest The University of Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and University of Southampton (UoS) are inviting expressions of interest for the role of Deputy Director for the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Wessex. The successful applicant will also be expected to act as ARC Wessex Director Designate, leading the preparations for, and submission of, an application. This is contingent on NIHR confirming organisations will be invited to submit applications to host an ARC for the period 2026 - 2031. Applicants should be an NIHR Senior Investigator and/or a renowned academic with national and international standing as a leader in their field. Any future application will build on the success of the current ARC, and thus applications for the Deputy Director/ Director Designate position will be open to theme leads, infrastructure leads and senior researchers engaged with the ARC NIHR ARCs support applied health and care research that responds to, and meets, the needs of local populations and local health and care systems. The NIHR BRC Academic Career Development Lead is responsible for the development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of the Academic Career Development Strategy. The strategy aims to attract, retain and develop individuals along the career pathway, from predoctoral scholar to senior research leader, supporting equity of opportunity, achieving a diverse workforce, and developing talented individuals from all relevant professional backgrounds (doctors, nurses, AHPs, pharmacists, scientists, infrastructure support staff). SoAR exists to inspire and support early career researchers in all health-related disciplines across the Southampton partnership, providing a focal point for research-related career development and training and a hub for Southampton’s vibrant and inspiring health-related research community. The partnership seeks to appoint two individuals to work with SoAR’s Executive Director and Associate Director with responsibility for doctors and research scientists. These individuals will lead the development and delivery of implementation plans to realise the relevant strategic goals of UHSFT’s Research for Impact strategy and contribute to the broader ambitions of the strategic partnership between the Trust and University. The NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre takes new discoveries, treatments and technologies into the clinic, using unique tools, facilities and world-changing expertise across our five key research areas. We aim to improve people's health and resilience throughout life, generating the next generation of improved and personalised treatments. NIHR BRC Theme Academic Career Development Lead Call for Expressions of Interest The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS) and University of Southampton (UoS) are inviting an Expression of Interest for the role of NIHR BRC Theme Academic Career Development Lead (ACDL). The NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre takes new discoveries, treatments and technologies into the clinic, using unique tools, facilities and world-changing expertise across our five key research areas. We aim to improve people's health and resilience throughout life, generating the next generation of improved and personalised treatments. Our Theme ACDLs are responsible for supporting the development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of the Academic Career Development Strategy.
