I am very pleased to have been elected as a Governor at UHSFT.

My professional background involved research into, and the management of, large service organisations with significant emphasis on feedback from users as input to service development and improving quality outputs. I have recently been actively engaged in monitoring the provision of local (Southampton) health services with particular regard to quality and the patient experience. I joined Southampton Link in 2011 and subsequently became a member of the Healthwatch Southampton Strategy Group. In this role I attended the Southampton City CCG Board and committees. This enabled me to assess various developments in health provision throughout the city in a range of organisations. I have also taken part in the Clinical Accreditation Scheme at UHSFT and PLACE (Patient Led Assessment of the Care Environment) at local hospitals.

All these activities focus on the user experience, an issue to which I am committed.

I spent 30 years as a financial adviser and retired in 2011. I came into Southampton General Hospital as a patient in April 2013 and after having had successful surgery, I decided to become a volunteer to help repay the hospital. I joined the League of Friends and spent many happy hours around the hospital selling newspapers, sweets and drinks to patients and staff. This led to me taking on the role as chairman of the League of Friends until the Covid 19 outbreak. After this, I decided to resign as chairman and became a guide at the Hospital, a role I have now been doing for three years and find very rewarding.

When the opportunity arose to put my name forward as a governor for the Trust, I gave it a lot of thought and much to my surprise I was elected. I hope that by becoming a governor, I will be able to help the Trust in the future. I hope to bring to the Council of Governors’ meetings a realisation of the trials and tribulations of the staff and visitors that I come across as a guide, especially when there are issues in the hospital.

I have lived in Southampton for over 50 years.

As a parent, grandparent, former headteacher and triathlete, I have an abiding interest in physical and mental wellbeing, and a particular interest in families, pregnancy, birth and exercise.

I successfully led and managed an organisation (secondary school) for 12 years.

For 7 years I was an ante-natal teacher, preparing individuals and couples for the realities and possibilities of birth and early parenthood.

I am currently the Welfare Officer for Southampton Triathlon Club: I ensure our Coaches have the essential qualifications, checks and training – to comply with legislation, and to enable Club members to meet their triathlon goals.

I am excited, and feel honoured to have been elected to serve on the Governing Body of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

I am really looking forward to being a part of UHS as a Public Governor and see this as a meaningful opportunity to make a positive difference.

I am committed to using my voice effectively, recognising the influence words can have when spoken in the right settings and on behalf of those who need it most.

I will bring the perspective of lived experience to represent people in similar situations, with the aim of bridging the gap between patients and services in ways that benefit both. My goal is to ensure the concerns and needs of the public are heard and acted on, contributing to positive and lasting change.

I am motivated to advocate for the public and determined to be the voice I never knew I needed, for others who may need someone to hear theirs too.

    Declaration of Interests:

Employee of Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare Trust
