Research in thoracic surgery
Research is a key part of understanding and improving treatment for people with lung diseases. To do this we need to ask people if they are willing to take part in research.
The thoracic surgery department is active in many research areas including lung cancer, lung fibrosis, airway diseases (like COPD) and lung infections. This research is done with partners like the University of Southampton. The research team is a core part of the thoracic surgical team.
It is entirely up to you whether you take part in research. If you decide not to take part it will have no impact on the care you receive.
You may be approached by the research team in clinic, by telephone or when you come in for your procedure to ask if you would be willing to take part in a research study.
If you are willing to take part, you will be given a patient information leaflet and asked to sign a consent form at that time.
If you do not wish to be approached, please let the thoracic surgical team know.
This depends on the research study but it may involve answering additional questions about your health and giving blood and tissue samples for research at the same time as your procedure or operation. These samples for research would be in addition to the samples taken for your diagnosis or treatment.
