Enhanced recovery after oesophagogastric surgery (EROS)

Our enhanced recovery programme reduces the length of time that patients need to stay in hospital after surgery.

EROS is aimed at patients who are having:

  • oesophagectomy (removal of the oesophagus)
  • sub-total gastrectomy (removal of the majority of the stomach)
  • total gastrectomy (removal of the stomach).

The pathway aims to make sure that patients:

  • are as healthy as possible before their operation through the support of our per-operative medicine team
  • receive the best possible care during admission and during their recovery
  • are discharged as soon as they can be after their operation by following as set of daily goals.

Our advance practitioners are responsible for overseeing the EROS programme. If you are on a pathway, the advance practitioner team will aim to visit you several times a week to help explain your recovery plan and support you or your support network during this time.

Enhanced recovery after anti-reflux surgery

In 2023 we started an enhanced recovery programme for patients having anti-reflux operations, specifically a Nissen or Watson fundoplication.

This programme used similar principles to the EROS pathway as above, with the support of the advanced practitioner team. It aims to get patients back home on the same day as surgery, or within 23 hours of surgery.

The outcomes of this pathway have been successful, and it is being reviewed to potentially be applied to a wider range of anti-reflux operations.
