Specialist nurses (clinical genetics)

Specialist nurses based in the Wessex clinical genetics department are responsible for assessing, counselling and supporting patients and their families at risk of inherited cardiac conditions, familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) and neurofibromatoses. They identify patients for genetic testing, help patients understand the condition, the implications of a genetic test and the risk of inheritance to family members. They order genetic tests and manage the patient’s pathway from testing through to results. This involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams to provide ongoing care for patients.
