Tongue tie (under 6 weeks)

A tongue-tie is when the fold of membrane that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth (frenulum) is shorter, or thicker than usual causing restriction to the movement of the tongue.

Some tongue-ties are easy to see and others are less obvious. About half of babies with a tongue-tie have someone else in the family who also has one. It is more common in boys. Research done in Southampton shows that over 10% of babies are born with this. For more information on tongue tie, please read our tongue tie information leaflet below.

If you have concerns about your baby's feeding or tongue-tie, you can speak to your midwife, local feeding support team or health visitor.

A tongue-tie service is available within the midwifery service until your baby is 6 weeks old and the child health department until your baby is 11 months old.

If your baby is younger than 6 weeks old
