Urgent clinical referrals (NHS professionals only)

If you have an urgent clinical concern regarding a patient, please contact the Wessex spinal service using one of the channels below:

Wessex spinal service referral pathway update 

Under the commissioned spinal pathway, direct referrals from GPs to the Wessex spinal service are not commissioned. Patient referrals should follow the commissioned pathway and initially be made to their local MSK provider for assessment and management.

Direct referrals from GPs risk being declined and/or redirected to the appropriate local MSK provider. This may result in a delay to the patient’s pathway journey.

The MSK provider will review and assess the patient, undertake any clinically appropriate investigations and explore conservative management options before determining whether referral to the Wessex spinal service is required.

Where referral to the Wessex spinal service is indicated, the MSK referrer must complete the digital referral form available below. Referrals should be submitted via e-RS using the following service:

8004094 – Spinal - Wessex MSK Spinal only - Southampton - UHSFT - RHM - Triage

Referrals submitted by email will no longer be accepted.
