Treatment (spinal service)

The Wessex spinal service is not commissioned to accept referrals from GPs. Patients should be referred to their local musculoskeletal service. If you have concerns regarding your back, please contact your GP. Not all referrals will require spinal surgery.

If you have a query about an outpatient appointment, please see our contact us page.

Patients having spinal surgery

The length of time you will be in hospital for depends on the exact nature of your surgery. You should expect to stay in hospital overnight.

On the day of your surgery, you will be admitted to our day of surgery ward. After your operation, you will be admitted to our dedicated spinal ward.

If you are due to have surgery with us, please familiarise yourself with the spinal enhanced recovery programme that we offer. This includes information on your recovery after surgery.

Information about your treatment

The British Association of Surgeons (BASS) has produced booklets on a range of conditions, you can find a list here.

The British Spinal Registry (BSR)

At your first face to face appointment you will be invited to consent to The British Spinal Registry (www.britishspineregistry.com). This aims to improve spinal care throughout the UK by encouraging research, good clinical practice and educating patients about spinal problems (available treatments. expectations and quality of life).

BSR is a web-based database for the collection of patient reported outcome measures (PROMS) with the aim of improving patient safety and monitoring the results of spinal surgical interventions.

Patients are asked to consent to their details being added to the BSR and are contacted to provide an update on their outcome following surgery. We encourage all our patients to participate in registering for the BSR.

For help and support with the registry, please contact customer.support@amplitude-clinical.com or call 0333 014 6363.
