Professor Flett is a consultant cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton and Professor at the University of Southampton. He specialises in heart failure, cardiomyopathy and advanced cardiac imaging.
He has particular expertise in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR), a non-invasive imaging technique that provides detailed information about the structure, function and tissue characteristics of the heart.
Professor Flett clinical work focuses on the diagnosis and management of complex heart muscle diseases, assessment of arrhythmic risk and the use of advanced imaging to guide personalised treatment decisions. He also has extensive experience in cardiac devices, including implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy.

Research
Alongside his NHS practice, Professor Flett leads research aimed at improving the assessment and treatment of patients with heart failure and cardiomyopathy.
He is chief investigator of the BRITISH trial, a major British Heart Foundation-funded national study investigating whether CMR can identify which patients with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy are most likely to benefit from an implantable cardioverter defibrillator.
His wider research interests include myocardial scar and tissue characterisation, arrhythmic risk assessment, remote monitoring in heart failure and the development of new clinical services and care pathways. He collaborates with researchers and clinicians nationally and internationally and contributes to the translation of research findings into clinical practice.
Patient care and education
Professor Flett is committed to providing clear, evidence-based and patient-centred care. He works closely with patients to explain complex cardiovascular conditions and to support informed, individualised treatment decisions.
He is also involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, supervises clinical researchers and contributes to the development of cardiovascular services at University Hospital Southampton.
