Dr Andrew Flett
MBBS BSc MRCP MD(res) CCDS
Specialty
Heart failure, cardiomyopathy and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR)
Experience
Dr Flett is a consultant cardiologist at University Hospital Southampton who specialises in heart failure, cardiomyopathy and advanced cardiac imaging. He is nationally recognised for his expertise in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) - a powerful, non-invasive imaging technique that helps doctors understand the structure and function of the heart in detail.
Dr Flett’s clinical work focuses on diagnosing and managing complex heart muscle diseases, improving risk assessment for arrhythmias, and guiding personalised treatment decisions. He uses advanced imaging and evidence-based approaches to support people with heart failure and related conditions.
Expertise includes:
- Heart failure diagnosis and management
- Cardiomyopathy (including non-ischaemic, hypertrophic)
- Advanced CMR imaging
- Risk stratification for arrhythmias and device therapy (ICD/monitoring devices)
- Translational research supporting national clinical practice
Professional roles:
- Consultant cardiologist, UHS
- Chief investigator, BRITISH trial
- Lead for national imaging and device innovation projects
Research
Alongside his NHS practice, Dr Flett leads major research efforts aimed at improving heart failure care. He is chief investigator of the national BRITISH trial, a large British Heart Foundation funded study investigating how advanced imaging can help determine which patients benefit most from implantable defibrillators (ICDs). His academic work has helped shape international practice in cardiac imaging and heart failure.
Dr Flett also contributes to research on remote heart failure monitoring, myocardial tissue characterisation, and the development of new services and pathways
Patient care and education
Dr Flett is committed to providing compassionate, patient-centred care and to empowering patients through clear communication. He also teaches and mentors future doctors and participates in NHS service development to improve care pathways.
Patients and referrers appreciate Dr Flett for his thoughtful approach to complex cardiovascular conditions and his dedication to integrating the latest evidence into everyday clinical care.
