Dr James Wilkinson
BSc (Hons), MB BS, PhD, FRCP
Experience
Dr Wilkinson is a consultant interventional cardiologist, appointed at UHS in 2011. He is fully trained in all aspects of coronary intervention, mitral and tricuspid valve intervention, bradycardia pacing and renal denervation.
Dr Wilkinson originally trained and worked in world-renowned high-volume units in London, with internationally recognised pioneers in interventional cardiology. He is also trained in all aspects of general cardiology, including echocardiography, and has an interest in cardiology and intensive care. Much of his clinical activity revolves around a busy 1:6 on-call for the regional heart attack service at UHS. He does cardiology clinics at Lymington New Forest Hospital. Dr Wilkinson has had numerous network roles and is currently the clinical intervention lead for the NHSE SE network.
Dr Wilkinson's clinical specialist areas are:
- Coronary intervention: trans-radial intervention, treatment of heart attacks, coronary physiology, coronary imaging, complex coronary disease including rotablation and chronic total occlusion (CTO) - UHS lead for CTO service.
- Mitral and tricuspid valve intervention: valvuloplasty, transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) and percutaneous valve replacement.
- Renal denervation.
- Brady cardia pacing.
Education and training
Dr Wilkinson has a longstanding specialist interest in medical education. He worked as an education research fellow in the education department at the Royal College of Physicians, London in 2003. While there, he developed new methods of assessment of doctors in training, including direct observation of procedural skills. Dr Wilkinson also has an interest in simulation-based training for procedures and previously led on this at both a national and regional level. He is an educational and clinical supervisor for Wessex Deanery and has actively contributed to this since 2011.
Research
Dr Wilkinson did a PhD in Cell Biology at UCL, where he developed an interest in mitochondrial biology, endothelial cell biology, role of reactive oxygen species in aging and disease. He has been actively involved in clinical research for many years and is one of the highest volume recruiters to cath-lab based clinical trials at UHS. He has been principal investigator for two renal denervation trials. He has also previously published in medical education, specifically on performance assessment and ran the first UK trial of this for SpRs.
