Dr Ramesh Kurukulaaratchy

Dr Ramesh Kurukulaaratchy (more commonly known as "Dr Ramesh") is a respiratory consultant at UHS, specialising in severe asthma and allergy.

Experience

Dr Ramesh Kurukulaaratchy (more commonly known as "Dr Ramesh") is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton and a respiratory consultant at UHS, specialising in severe asthma and allergy. He specialises in treating patients with difficult to treat asthma and allergies in the outpatient clinic setting. He undertakes 1-2 clinics per week in Southampton and a weekly outreach clinic at the David Hide Asthma & Allergy Centre on the Isle of Wight. He has expertise in multidisciplinary approaches to difficult to treat asthma and allergy, overseeing specialist activities including biologic therapies, immunotherapy and food challenges for patients with these conditions.

Having graduated in Medicine from the University of Southampton, Dr Ramesh undertook postgraduate research in Asthma & Allergy leading to a Doctor of Medicine postgraduate degree at the University of Southampton. He then specialised in General and Respiratory Medicine through the Yorkshire Deanery before returning to University Hospital Southampton (UHS)as a Consultant with specific interests in asthma and allergy in 2006. In 2018 he moved to a post as Principal Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, becoming Associate Professor there in 2022. He continues to hold an Honorary Consultant post at UHS and to deliver regular outpatient clinical work there.

Responsibilities

Dr Ramesh has several other current local and regional responsibilities which include:

  • Co-lead for the allergic airways module of MSc in allergy at the University of Southampton
  • Lead for third and fifth year medical student allergy modules
  • Member of the South West Allergy & Immunology Network.

Research

Dr Ramesh is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton where he leads the Asthma & Allergy Research Hub. He has an active research portfolio, predominantly as a clinical epidemiologist looking at the clinical patterns of asthma and allergy. He has published 95 articles in peer reviewed journals to date.

Areas of research interest include the natural history, diverse nature, risk factors for and prevention of asthma and allergic disease as a senior co-investigator in the Isle of Wight research programme. He established, and is Chief Investigator for, the WATCH study within the Severe Asthma clinic. The study offers a novel research model that engages NHS clinic patients in research through their routine clinical care. This recruited over 600 patients and has attracted over £1.4 million of external funding from the NIH, Asthma-UK and Industry. It has also revealed many new insights into the nature of complex asthma in a real-world setting.

Dr Ramesh has been a co-applicant on successful NIHR, MRC, NIH USA and industry funded grant applications and currently holds grants with both NIH and Asthma-UK. He works closely with collaborators at the La Jolla Institute for Immunology, University of Memphis and University of California San Diego and Nottingham Trent University. He is also actively involved in large-scale research multicentre collaborations including AADCRC, UBIOPRED and SHARP.
