Experience

Dr Sathish Harinarayanan is a dedicated consultant clinical oncologist specialising in the non-surgical treatment of Bowel Cancers. Uniquely trained in both systemic therapies and advanced radiotherapy techniques. Dr Harinarayanan designs comprehensive, holistic care pathways tailored specifically to each patient. His main area of interests is organ preserving strategies in rectal cancers for patients who prefer to avoid permanent stoma bags.

Core member of our regional lower Gastrointestinal Multidisciplinary Team (MDT), collaborating closely with surgeons, radiologists, and specialist nurses to ensure every patient benefits from collective expert opinion. Alongside his clinical practice, Dr Harinarayanan is an active researcher, serving as the principal investigator for several national clinical trials aimed at bringing next-generation cancer therapies to the bedside. He is widely recognized by patients and colleagues alike for her compassionate communication, clear explanations, and commitment to patient dignity.

Clinical interests and treatments

  • Systemic therapies: Tailored delivery of modern chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapies.
  • Advanced radiotherapy: High-precision treatment planning, including Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR).
  • Precision medicine: Using genetic and tumor profiling to select the most effective therapies.
  • Symptom management: Integrated supportive care to minimize side effects and optimize quality of life.

Key achievements

Dr Harinarayanan undertook and completed a prestigious proton therapy clinical education programme at the University of Pennsylvania, USA and the MRL-SABR accreditation from GCUK and PGC in oncology from the Institute of Cancer Research, London.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr Harinarayanan holds membership with the British Association Colorectal Oncology Group, served as co-chair of the Wessex Head and Neck Cancer alliance group in past and also served as a member of the panel for the Wessex Clinical Oncology trainees, and is the elected governor for medical and dental staffing for Southampton attending the trust board meetings.

Awards and prizes

Dr Harinarayanan won a Wessex shine award for implementing the out of hours cancer care management service at University Hospital of Southampton in 2015.

Research

Dr Harinarayanan actively participates in research, being the PI (principal investigator) for the country’s leading trials like PATHOS, APHRODITE for organ preserving strategies with radiotherapy for rectal cancer patients who wish to avoid permanent stoma bags. He has also acted at a co-investigator capacity for other leading UK clinical trials in Wessex like CHECKMATE 642, LiTEFORM, KEYNOTE 412, INNOVATE, ToRPEDO and NEOPRISM trial, recruiting several patients so far, who benefited from the trial.
